The history of this kind of game

The "watch the sequence, then repeat it" format was popularized by Simon, an electronic game released by Milton Bradley in 1978. Simon was originally designed by Ralph Baer — the same engineer who designed the first home video game console — and Howard Morrison. The game became a cultural icon of the late 1970s and 1980s, and the underlying mechanic has been re-implemented thousands of times since in educational software, brain-training apps, and games like this one.

What Sequence Recall trains

The task requires you to hold an ordered sequence of items in working memory and reproduce it. Unlike the digit-span test, which uses arbitrary verbal symbols (numerals), this version uses spatially distinct, colored, named locations — which allows you to encode the sequence in multiple ways at once: visually, spatially, verbally (by silently naming colors), and rhythmically (the sequence has a tempo). Multi-modal encoding typically allows slightly longer sequences than purely verbal or purely spatial formats.

Worked example

Round 1 (length 3): Red → Green → Blue. You click Red, Green, Blue. Round 2 (length 4): Yellow → Red → Blue → Green. You reproduce them in that order. The sequence grows by one each round until you click the wrong panel or click out of order.

Typical scores

Without specific practice, most adults reach sequences of 6-9 panels before failing. Reaching 10+ reliably usually requires either substantial practice on this exact task or the use of deliberate encoding strategies (verbal labeling of each color in sequence, chunking the sequence into groups of 2-3 panels).

Strategies that help

  • Name each color silently as it lights up. Saying "red, green, blue, yellow" in your head turns the spatial sequence into a verbal one you can rehearse.
  • Group into chunks. A 9-step sequence is easier as three chunks of three than as nine separate steps.
  • Use rhythm. The sequence has a natural tempo; matching it when you click helps preserve order.
