How to Build a Memory Palace: A Step-by-Step Guide

The memory palace — also called the method of loci, or "places and images" — is a memorization technique invented in ancient Greece and used continuously ever since. World memory champions use it to memorize thousands of digits of pi, the order of shuffled decks of cards, and the names of hundreds of strangers. It works for them for the same reason it works for everyone: human spatial memory is vastly better than rote verbal memory, and the method exploits that asymmetry directly. This guide walks through how to do it, with a worked example, and explains what the research does and does not show about its broader cognitive effects.

The principle

Humans evolved to remember places. Hunter-gatherers who could recall the location of a fruiting tree, a water source, or a predator's den had a serious survival advantage. We did not evolve to remember sequences of arbitrary verbal tokens — numbers, names, lists. The memory palace works by translating the second kind of information into the first. You take a familiar physical space and "place" vivid mental images in specific locations within it. To recall the original information, you walk through the space mentally and "see" the images, which decode back to the original items.

The technique was first described in the Rhetorica ad Herennium, a Roman textbook on rhetoric from around 85 BCE, though it was already old by then. Greek and Roman orators used it to memorize hours-long speeches. Medieval scholars used it to memorize entire books. In the 16th century, the philosopher Giordano Bruno built elaborate memory palaces as part of his philosophical system. The technique has been continuously practiced for over two thousand years because it works.

How to build one: step by step

Read through these steps once, then try it yourself with the worked example below. The whole thing takes about ten minutes to learn, and after a little practice you will be able to use it on demand.

Step 1: Choose a familiar location

Pick a place you know so well that you can walk through it in your mind without effort. Your home is the obvious first choice. Your workplace, your childhood home, or a route you walk regularly also work. The space needs to be familiar, not necessarily large — even a single room with five distinct spots is enough for a first list.

Step 2: Plan a fixed route

Decide on a specific order in which you will "visit" locations within the space. For your home, you might walk in through the front door, down the hallway, into the living room, to the kitchen, and so on. Pick between 5 and 20 distinct stops along the route — the front doormat, the coat hook, the hallway mirror, the couch, the kitchen counter. The stops need to be specific and consistent: you will always visit them in the same order.

Step 3: Place vivid images at each location

For each item you want to memorize, create a mental image and place it at the next stop on your route. The image must be:

  • Vivid. Bright colors, exaggerated sizes, strong emotions.
  • Specific. Not "a dog" but "a wet golden retriever shaking water all over the couch."
  • Active or absurd. The image should be doing something, or be in a situation that violates expectations. Boring images are forgotten; absurd ones stick.
  • Directly connected to the item. The image should remind you of the actual thing you're memorizing, not just be associated with it.

Step 4: Walk the route to recall

To retrieve the list, mentally walk through your palace in the same order you built it. At each stop, "look at" the image you placed there and decode it back to the item. With practice, the decoding is instantaneous.

A worked example

Suppose you need to memorize this list of ten items, in order:

  1. Eggs
  2. Milk
  3. Bread
  4. Apples
  5. Coffee
  6. Soap
  7. Toilet paper
  8. Onions
  9. Cheese
  10. Tomatoes

Walk through your home. At the front doormat, you see a giant egg, cracked open, with yolk dripping down the door — that's eggs. At the coat hook, a carton of milk is hanging from the hook by its handle, dripping onto your coat — milk. On the hallway mirror, a slice of bread is taped across the glass — bread. On the couch, a tree is growing out of the cushion with red apples hanging from its branches — apples. On the kitchen counter, a steaming mug of coffee is erupting like a volcano — coffee. In the kitchen sink, a giant bar of soap is bubbling uncontrollably — soap. On top of the toilet tank, a giant roll of toilet paper has unfurled across the bathroom floor — toilet paper. In the bathtub, a pile of onions is crying actual tears — onions. On your bed, a wheel of cheese is melting in the sun coming through the window — cheese. On the bedside table, a tomato is sitting in a tiny chair, wearing reading glasses, reading a book — tomatoes.

Now close your eyes and walk the route. Doormat: dripping egg. Hook: hanging milk. Mirror: taped bread. Couch: apple tree. Counter: coffee volcano. Sink: soapy bubbles. Toilet: unrolled paper. Tub: crying onions. Bed: melting cheese. Table: reading tomato. Decode each image back to its item, and you have your list, in order, with no rehearsal.

If you tried this, you almost certainly got at least 8 of the 10. With a little practice, 10 of 10 becomes routine. The same technique scales: memory competitors use multiple palaces (their homes, friends' homes, schools, workplaces, familiar vacation spots) chained together to memorize hundreds or thousands of items.

What the research shows

The method of loci has been studied extensively. A particularly striking recent study trained CIA analysts in the method of loci, the major system (a phonetic number-memorization system), and elaborative encoding for just over an hour. Four months later, with no practice in between, the trained group showed 45% higher recall on a memory test than an untrained control group. That is a large effect for a single hour of training, and it persisted months later.

A 2021 study (PMC) used a four-week memory-training program combining n-back and method-of-loci practice and found meaningful improvements on trained memory tasks. Practical uses

  • Speeches and presentations. Orators have used this technique for two thousand years because it works for long, ordered content.
  • Shopping lists. The example above. Build the palace once, reuse it for the next list by overwriting the old images.
  • Names and faces. When you meet someone, place an image representing their name at a specific spot on their face. The image of "Mr. Baker" as a baker's hat on his head is more durable than the name itself.
  • Exam material. Medical students use it to memorize anatomy; law students use it for case lists. The technique scales to whatever you need to memorize.
  • Daily habits and numbers. PINs, phone numbers, addresses — anything you find yourself re-looking-up can be encoded once and recalled forever.

Common mistakes

  • Boring images. "An egg on the doormat" won't stick. "A giant cracked egg with yolk pouring down the door" will.
  • Too many stops in one location. Five to twenty stops per palace is the sweet spot. Cramming fifty items into one room gets confusing.
  • Inconsistent routes. Always walk the route in the same order. If you reverse direction next time, the order falls apart.
  • Skipping the "absurd" step. Plain realistic images are forgettable. The technique works precisely because absurd images are memorable.
